On August 21, 2024, my wife, Barbara and I went camping up in Payson, Arizona, in a lush green forest. There were a variety of plants, flowers and mushrooms. After setting up our campsite, we ate our lunch. I walked around and saw a partially eaten red mushroom. I wondered to my wife if this is a good mushroom to eat. I took a photo of it to research later, when we had internet service again, back in town when we left.
After Barbara and I ate our lunch, we sat in our camping chairs with our portable table. We got out our chocolate chip cookies and placed them on the table. While enjoying our cookies, we saw a squirrel nearby. I began chirping to it, in hopes it would come over to where we were sitting. I could tell it worked, because the squirrel kept looking at us, inching its way toward us.
I broke off a small portion of my cookie and tossed it a few feet away from us, knowing that squirrels have a very sensitive olfactory sense. This would draw the squirrel closer to us.
It worked! The squirrel scampered to the cookie, grabbed it, stuffed it in his cheeks and ran off. We watched him eat the cookie on top of a large rock. I decided to see how close I could get the squirrel to come. I broke off another small piece of the same cookie and threw it closer to us, on the ground. The squirrel repeated his cookie acquisition, running off again to eat his prize.
I threw just one more small piece of the cookie, feeling I didn’t want him to get sick from eating too much. I threw the cookie piece in a totally different direction. Barbara and I were both amazed just how sensitive the squirrel was able to pick up the smell and retrieve the small cookie piece.
It was getting late and we went inside our camper to relax for the evening. We feel asleep and woke up the next morning. I went outside our camper to take care of business (wink-wink) before breakfast. To my surprise, I found the very same red mushroom I was marveling at the day before, lying next to the door mat. There were three small portions of the mushroom laying in a straight line toward the camper! I exclaimed to Barbara, “Come look!” The squirrel brought this mushroom to the mat, ate some of it and broke off three small pieces, in a way to express sharing his mushroom with us, just as the way we broke off our three cookie pieces and shared them with him.
When I looked around the nearby forest area, all of the mushrooms were gone and eaten by the squirrel. The one by our doorstep, was left untouched.
The above photo was taken by me, showing the mushroom pieces on a doorstep.
We realized this is a reflection of what we did for the squirrel and this was his way of showing gratitude and respect toward us. From this experience, it has deepened our connection to the oneness and its reflection of just how much the universe respects us and how everyone is a part of the universe and vice versa.
